The two year mark is called the “change of definition” (COD) in most disability policies. The COD is a critical juncture – when the definition of disability changes from your “own occupation” to “any occupation”. Under the “any occupation” definition, an individual is considered disabled if they are unable to perform the duties of any job that is reasonably suitable for them based on their education, training, or experience. Most disability insurers understandably try and terminate disability benefits at the 2 years change of definition.
