Of all the various ways that vehicle accidents occur in Ontario, head-to-head collisions are probably the worst and most horrific. The combined speed and force of head-on impacts often lead to terrible life-changing injuries and, on some occasions, death. For example, if two cars are travelling towards each other at 80km/hr, a head-on collision will have a force of 160 km/hr when the two automobiles hit. As you might imagine, there is a significant difference between striking another vehicle or object at 80km/hr and striking one at 160 km/hr.  Survival rates start to plummet if involved in any accident over 75/km an hour.

Causes of Head-On Collisions

From our experience, when head-on car collisions occur, something has to have gone horribly wrong.  While some of the head-on accidents happen between lanes and others find both cars in one lane, at least one driver has to be out of position.  In addition, more often than not, there will be one driver that is or is suffering from:

  • Distraction;
  • Driver fatigue;
  • Poor vision;
  • Not paying attention;
  • Driving too fast;
  • Driving too fast on slippery roads;
  • Dangerous weather conditions or;
  • Impaired driving by drugs and alcohol is also a frequent occurrence.

Head-on Collision Injuries

Vehicle crumple zones and airbags can certainly reduce and absorb the collision impact, but when two high-speed vehicles travelling at a significant speed are involved in a head-on crash, the velocities of the vehicles change suddenly. Unfortunately, the occupants inside the cars continue to move at pre-impact velocity. When this happens, there is no amount of safety engineering that can prevent serious or catastrophic injuries. Most head-on car accident victims do not survive.

Those who do survive are often impaired with significant personal injuries. A victim’s life will most likely never return to normal, even after extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation.   It is not common for victims to suffer serious injuries such as:

  • Abdominal trauma and internal injuries;
  • Hip-related trauma due to seat-belt stress;
  • Paraplegia;
  • Quadriplegia;
  • Tetraplegia;
  • Serious fractures;
  • Brain injuries and TBI and;
  • Amputations.

An injury victim may never return to work due to his or her permanent disability. The family may lose a significant amount of income and be unable to pay bills or manage day-to-day expenses.
