Every year, Canadians suffer from traumatic and non-traumatic conditions and ailments which affect everyday movement, including walking, climbing stairs, hiking, driving, kneeling, stooping or crouching. Many Canadians also suffer from acute or traumatic-related knee injuries such as fractures to the patella or tibial plateau or ligament injuries to the ACL, MCL or LCL, as well as meniscal tears and damage to cartilage caused by various types of accidents.
The knee is a major load bearing joint that supports your body and moves like a door hinge, allowing you to bend and straighten your leg so that you can sit, squat, jump and run.
If you or your loved one has suffered a knee injury caused by someone else’s negligence you may be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering and lost wages. Contact our Hamilton Personal Injury Lawyers for more information on how we can help you.
The Most Common Knee Injuries
Tibia Plateau Fractures: The tibial plateau fracture is the most common knee fracture that we see in our practice is the tibial plateau fracture. Soft tissues (skin, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and ligaments) may be injured at the time of the fracture. These common types of acute traumatic fractures can be treated surgically or conservatively.
Ligament sprains and tears: The knee has four ligaments that may get damaged: the ACL, PCL, LCL and MCL. Doctors use a grading system to measure the degree of tear. A grade 1 is a slight stretching, a grade 2 is a partial tear and a grade 3 is a complete tear.
Ruptured patellar tendon injuries: A ruptured patella tendon is a major injury. The patellar tendon is what attaches the shinbone to the kneecap. When it ruptures, you will not be able to straighten your leg.
Dislocated knee: This is a painful injury, and recovery will depend on the severity. If damage to the kneecap did not occur, this injury may heal within a few weeks with rest or even a brace or cast. Physical therapy may be recommended to help regain range of motion and strengthen the leg. In the case of damage to the kneecap, surgery may be necessary.
Fractures: There are three varying degrees of knee fractures:
- A stable fracture is the least serious. Pieces of the bone remain in contact with each other, but there is a visible break or crack.
- A displaced fracture is when some of the bone has been displaced.
- A comminuted fracture is very serious, with the bone shattering into at least three pieces.
Damage to Cartilage: The cartilage is the tissue that cushions the bones of the knee joint, helping ligaments slide easily over the bones and protecting the bones from impact.
How Serious is a Tibial Plateau Fracture?
Believe it or not, the knee is the largest weight-bearing joint in your body. Three bones meet to form your knee joint: the femur (thighbone), tibia (shinbone), and patella (kneecap). The tibial plateau is the upper surface of the tibia or shinbone. Tibial plateau fractures are considered complex injuries by orthopedic surgeons, produced by high- or low-energy trauma. The complicated fracture or bone break normally happens on the top surface of the shinbone in the knee joint. Victims of tibial plateau fractures may complain of the stiffness of the knee and be unable to bear weight on the injured leg. 50% of tibial plateau fractures are normally associated with other serious injuries, such as meniscal injury, medial collateral ligament injury, anterior cruciate injury or compartment syndrome.
